Radisson Blu Edwardian: Multi-Site Hotel Energy Reduction

Radisson Blu Edwardian Hotels operate a collection of 14 deluxe hotels in central London, Heathrow and Manchester. Each hotel provides stylish accommodation, high-level service, individually designed rooms, latest technology, meeting spaces and chic restaurants and bars. As a luxury brand, their clients demand more than just good rooms and food - a strong environmental and sustainability policy is essential for retaining and attracting new clients.
The Challenge
As part of their development and growth, Radisson Edwardian needed to reduce energy costs while maintaining world-class service. The Radisson Edwardian Heathrow's main kitchen extract system consumed a constant 18kW, 24 hours per day, exhausting over 7m³/sec of conditioned air continuously into the atmosphere. The air conditioning system incorporated a 17.5kW supply fan. Both systems ran constantly regardless of cooking activity.
The Solution
Cheetah was installed at The Radisson Edwardian Heathrow as the initial trial. The system continuously monitors cooking activity in two kitchens and adjusts both extract and supply fan speeds to match conditions. The extract and air supply are now automatically controlled as conditions demand. The supply air fan is programmed to slave the extract fan down to a preset speed, increasing overall energy savings.
The Results
The installation delivered significant impact. Power consumed by the extract fan reduced by over 50%. Loss of conditioned air to atmosphere reduced by approximately 50%. Overall energy consumption reduced by 62%. Annual savings: 159,966 kWh, 84 tonnes of carbon and £14,118 in costs with a 1.39-year payback period. Radisson Edwardian was so impressed with the savings that they installed Cheetah in a further 10 properties, achieving similar results across the estate.
