Mile End Hospital in London is part of Barts Health NHS Trust, the largest NHS Trust in the UK serving 2.5 million people in East London. The Trust aims to be the most sustainable in the UK, committed to reducing environmental impact through infrastructure investment, improved biodiversity and integrated behavioural change. Mile End Hospital became the first hospital in the UK to use Cheetah technology for energy-efficient savings.

The Challenge

Mile End's main kitchen serves 13,783 staff plus events throughout the year. The ventilation system consumed a constant 40kW, 24 hours per day, exhausting over 2m³/sec of conditioned air continuously into the atmosphere. The air conditioning system incorporated a 4.0kW supply fan running constantly.

With the majority of catering outsourced but the main kitchen still heavily in use, energy saving was a huge consideration for the NHS.

The Solution

We installed Cheetah in the main kitchen. The system monitors cooking activity and adjusts fan speeds automatically, eliminating the constant 40kW consumption that ran regardless of kitchen usage. The technology controls both extract and supply fans, matching ventilation to actual demand rather than exhausting conditioned air continuously.

The Results

Annual savings: 49,794 kWh, 13.3 tonnes of CO₂, and £2,725 in costs. The 81% energy reduction achieved a payback period of 1.95 years.

Ongoing Partnership

Mile End Hospital was so impressed with the savings that they're now working closely with Barts Health NHS Trust to roll the system out to other hospitals in the group. As the first UK hospital to adopt Cheetah technology, Mile End has demonstrated how demand-controlled ventilation delivers measurable energy and carbon reductions in healthcare settings.
