The Challenge

The Jack Fairman in Horley needed to reduce ventilation energy consumption in its commercial kitchen as part of Wetherspoon's company-wide commitment to minimising energy use. Kitchen ventilation fans ran constantly regardless of cooking activity, consuming significant energy while the kitchen experienced varying levels of demand throughout service. The pub needed a solution that delivered measurable savings while maintaining kitchen comfort and safety.

The Solution

Cheetah Energy Control System was installed at The Jack Fairman, Horley. The system controls extract and supply fans, allowing them to run only when necessary. Using temperature, optical and flow sensors, Cheetah detects heat, steam and smoke created by cooking and reacts by altering fan speeds up and down as required. This approach reduces not only fan energy consumption but also heating and cooling losses.

The Results

Annual savings: 36,167 kWh, 8.1 tonnes of carbon, and £9,041 in costs (based on 25p per kWh). The 69% reduction in ventilation energy consumption achieved a 1.88-year payback period. Additional benefits include reduced maintenance costs, extended equipment lifespan and fewer repairs - saving both money and time for the restaurant. The system maintains kitchen comfort and safety while delivering substantial energy reductions.

Ongoing Partnership

Following the success at The Jack Fairman, we are continuing to install Cheetah across the JD Wetherspoon UK estate. The installation demonstrates how demand-controlled ventilation supports Wetherspoon's environmental commitments while delivering strong financial returns across their pub operations.
