Claridge's: Energy Reduction in a Luxury London Hotel

- 49,275 kWh saved annually
- 24.8 tonnes carbon saved per year
- 30% energy consumption reduction
- £10,178 annual savings
- 1.80-year payback period

Claridge's is owned by the Maybourne Hotel Group, who own and manage three of the world's most renowned luxury London hotels - Claridge's, The Connaught and The Berkeley. Committed to delivering authentic and unique guest experiences, Claridge's needed an energy-saving solution as unique as the hotel itself, custom-made for the demands of their busy kitchens.

The Challenge

Claridge's kitchen ventilation system consumed over 450 kWh per day. Two 11kW fans - extract and supply - ran at 100% speed at all times, regardless of cooking activity. This constant full-speed operation wasted significant energy while the kitchen experienced varying levels of activity throughout the day. The hotel needed accurate control that matched fan speed to actual demand while maintaining the luxury service standards their guests expect.

The Solution

Two Cheetah systems were installed on the 11kW supply and extraction fans. The system incorporates sensors measuring temperature, smoke, steam and airflow in the extract and supply ducts to determine optimal flow rates. Cheetah automatically reacts to kitchen conditions, ramping up extraction during busy service and reducing it during quieter periods, while keeping kitchen conditions constant at all times. The system also incorporates a gas isolation module for cutting off gas supply in emergencies, enhancing safety.

The Results

Daily energy consumption dropped from over 450 kWh to 315 kWh. Annual savings: 49,275 kWh, 24.8 tonnes of carbon, and £10,178 in costs. The 30% energy reduction achieved a 1.80-year payback period. By controlling fan speed to match application demands instead of running at 100% constantly, Claridge's achieved significant energy savings while maintaining the constant kitchen conditions required for luxury service.

Ongoing Partnership

Following the success of the initial installation, Cheetah has been installed in all kitchens at Claridge's. The hotel is environmentally Five Star certified, contributing to carbon reduction activities and protecting future generations while maintaining their reputation for world-class luxury hospitality.
